Author Guidelines

Important: Calls for Papers Published before the New Guidelines

Exceptionally, submissions intended for the three calls listed below must follow the previous Author Guidelines and use the previous REH template:

All new submissions made on or after 18 August 2026 must follow the new Author Guidelines and use the journal’s new templates.

Chicago Author-Date System

The Revista Eletrônica Estudos Hegelianos publishes articles, reviews, translations, and interviews in accordance with the specifications set out below.

Articles

Submitted articles must be original and between 7,000 and 10,000 words (approximately 38,000 to 55,000 characters including spaces), including references and footnotes. Texts exceeding this limit may be accepted at the discretion of the Editorial Team; when necessary, they will be returned to the authors for adjustment before the review process begins.

The article template must be used: This link.

Evaluation criteria: editorial suitability, clarity and style, fulfillment of the stated objectives, quality of the bibliography, and other aspects considered by the reviewers.

Book Reviews

Critical book reviews must be original and no longer than 3,000 words (approximately 17,000 characters including spaces).

The works reviewed should preferably have been published within the previous three years. The Editorial Team may accept reviews of works published earlier when their academic relevance justifies publication.

The book review template must be used: This link.

Translations

Translations of relevant philosophical texts (articles, essays, or excerpts) must be previously unpublished and may not exceed 20,000 words (110,000 characters including spaces).

To broaden access for undergraduate students and researchers to classic texts in the philosophical tradition and to international debates, members of the Editorial Team, including Associate Editors and the Editor-in-Chief, may propose and prepare translations for publication in the journal. The relevance of these contributions is assessed by the Editorial Team according to the same standards of academic relevance and editorial quality applied to other submissions.

The translation template must be used: This link.

Interviews

Interviews must be previously unpublished and contain between 4,000 and 8,000 words (22,000 to 44,000 characters including spaces).

The interview template must be used: This link.

Reference Guidelines

References must follow the Chicago author-date system. Sources are cited in abbreviated form in the body of the text, in parentheses, using the author’s surname, year of publication, and, when necessary, the page or page range. A complete reference list must appear at the end of the manuscript. Footnotes should be reserved for substantive comments and additional explanations, rather than used solely for bibliographic citations.

In-Text Citations

Direct and indirect citations must follow the format (Author year, page). No comma is used between the surname and the year; the page number is separated from the year by a comma. The abbreviation p. must not be used in parenthetical citations.

One author: (Ferrarin 2001, 312)
Narrative citation: Ferrarin (2001, 312) argues that [...]
Two works: (Ferrarin 2001, 312; Marcuse 1978, 45)
Page range: (Ferrarin 2001, 312–318)
Works by the same author published in the same year: (Surname 2024a, 18; Surname 2024b, 42)
Citation without a page number: (Ferrarin 2001)

Citing Hegel’s Works in German

Hegel’s works in German must be cited in the body of the text using the abbreviations TWA and GW, followed by the volume number, a colon, and the page number. As an exception, these references replace the author-date format for the two editions indicated. Full details of the edition used must appear in the final reference list.

Suhrkamp edition: TWA volume: page or paragraph number. Example: (TWA 3: 145)
Meiner critical edition: GW volume: page or paragraph number. Example: (GW 14,1: § 132)
Page range: (TWA 3: 145–146); (GW 9: 112–114)
More than one edition in the same citation: (TWA 7: § 132; GW 14,1: § 132)

When translations of Hegel’s works into other languages are used, authors may adopt their own abbreviations. In that case, the abbreviation must be identified in a footnote at its first occurrence, indicating the edition used, which must also appear in the reference list.

Reference List

References must be listed alphabetically by the first author’s surname, with a 1.25 cm hanging indent from the second line onward. Only works actually cited in the manuscript should be included. When more than one work by the same author was published in the same year, lowercase letters must be added to the year (2024a, 2024b, etc.) both in the text and in the reference list.
