Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling — Freedom and Nature

To mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling (1775–1854), the Revista de Estudos Hegelianos  invites researchers to submit articles, translations, and reviews for a special issue dedicated to the legacy of this philosophy.

Through the intensity of his intellectual activity—distinguished by interactions and collaborations with Fichte, the Schlegel brothers, Goethe, Hegel, and Jacobi—and the depth and relevance of his work, Schelling emerges as one of the most decisive figures in the formation of contemporary thought. The breadth and impact of his contributions to the study of ancient philosophy, the development of a philosophy of nature, the grasp of the defining features of modernity, and the course of studies on ancient and Christian mythology form a constellation that continues to resonate not only in philosophy but also across diverse fields such as natural science, theology, psychoanalysis, and aesthetics.

This commemorative thematic issue aims to bring together contributions that address both the analysis of Schelling’s major works and theses and the reconstruction of the impact and unfolding of his legacy in the works of other philosophers and thinkers. Submissions are especially welcome on the following topics:

  • Schelling’s Philosophy of Nature: origins, conception, and developments;

  • Reason, mythology and history;

  • The Schelling–Hegel relationship and the overcoming of transcendental subjectivism;

  • Natural history and world history;

  • The Schelling–Jacobi debate on freedom, or on “divine things”;

  • The connection between freedom, evil, and finitude (including its reception in existentialist philosophy and 20th-century theology);

  • Mythology, theogony, and revelation in Schelling’s Philosophy of Religion;

  • The legacy of Schelling in philosophy, psychoanalysis, and contemporary aesthetic theories;

  • Schelling’s philosophy of nature and the environmental crisis.

This issue seeks to foster new readings, critical revaluations, and interpretations of a body of thought that—precisely because of its open and multifaceted character—continues to challenge and engage our present time.
