Alienation and Generalization: an Inquiry Concerning the Relationship between the Singular and Universal Wills in the chapter Absolute Freedom and Terror of Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit

Abstract

The text aims to analyse the chapter Absolute Freedom and the Terror of Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit in order to determine the relationship established between the singular and universal wills in the figure of absolute freedom. Throughout our article, we argue that absolute freedom must be analyzed in light of its position in the world of culture, which requires us to conceive the relationship between the wills as a product of a process of alienation. Additionally, we argue that, by grounding the bond between wills in the process of alienation, we are able to highlight the specificity of the transition to the figure of morality.
