ABSTRACT: In the Phenomenology of Spirit Hegel aims at justifying a conception of knowledge in which the separation of self-certainty and objective reference is superseded. The function of the chapter “Self-consciousness” in this project is to criticize figures of self-consciousness which are opposed to this conception, insofar as the certainty of itself here excludes all objective reference from its essence and tries to manifest itself as “absolute negativity” in relation to the entire sphere of objective-natural being. The aim of this paper is to clarify the relation between this critical function of the self-consciousness chapter and the critique of the philosophy of subjectivity formulated by Hegel in his earlier writings, in particular in Faith and Knowledge. It is argued that the Hegelian critique of philosophical conceptions of subjectivity and the reconstruction of the figures of self-consciousness, even if they are situated on different theoretical levels, correspond to each other in such a way that taking into account their correspondence contributes to understanding the systematic function of the self-consciousness’ chapter. This chapter can be understood as continuing the critique of the fichtean conception of subjectivity by other methodological means, superseding thereby the dualism of form and matter which in Faith and Knowledge had been considered the epistemological nucleus of the philosophy of subjectivity.
